Wal-Mart drops food prices in the West

Wal-Mart says it\'s lowering prices on certain food staples at stores in Western Canada. Prices on milk, bread, eggs and butter will all be cut--in some cases by as much as 20%, according to a Wal-Mart Canada spokesperson. The price of 1% and 2% four-litre jugs of milk will be $3.97 ($3.87 in Alberta); a 567g loaf of whole wheat and white bread will be $1.67, large 1-dozen eggs $1.97 and a 454g pack of butter $2.97. Prices had varied across stores on these items but now will be standardized. Bill Chisholm, a retail analyst in Toronto, thinks the price cuts are a reaction to increasing discount competition Wal-Mart faces in the West. Source: Canadian Grocer E-Newsletter, March 15, 2010
