Wal-Mart Gets BC Rejection—TwiceJust days after Vancouver City Council famously turned down an application for a new Wal-Mart, Campbell River has rejected another proposal from the world's biggest retailer. After three nights of public hearings on the rezoning that would be necessary to accommodate the proposed 111,000-sq.-ft. store on a site close to the river, council made a decision that reflected the town's overwhelming opposition to the plan. The store was to have been on a 33-acre site close to Campbell River's downtown, in an area considered environmentally sensitive. The overwhelming concern articulated during the hearings was protection of the estuary. Source: Canadian Grocer E-Newsletter, July 29, 2005.
