Unit Sales Help Raise Maple Leaf Foods ProfitMaple Leaf Foods posted significant profit ($220.4 million) in its third quarter helped by the sale of its livestock-feed business. The strong Canadian dollar and the rising grain costs hurt the company's meat and bakery business. The profit included $217.7 million gain from the sale of its livestock business to a Dutch food group. "The food industry continued to battle unprecedented food inflation related to wheat, corn and other input costs, in addition to the ongoing rise in the Canadian dollar," said chief executive Michael McCain.
